Hello, I’m Siân. I’m a pole dancing comedian and writer from Belgium, now living in London. This is my blog about pole dancing, comedy and mental health.
I love pole dancing and learning to hang off a stick has been completely transformative for my mental health, self-esteem, and mind-body connection – it’s generally improved all the things that make it nice to be a meatshape skeleton flying through space. I’m evangelical about sharing pole dancing with people and exploring the positive change it can make in your life.
I started combining pole dancing with comedy in 2022: my first pole dancing comedy show had a sold out debut at Camden People’s Theatre’s Festival of Feminism, and my pole comedy hour Pole Yourself Together! picked up a stack of 5-star reviews at the 2023 Edinburgh Fringe. I’ve also spent a lot of time lying face-down on the floor and wondering what the hell I’m doing.
So, while I’ve been specialising as a stick-dangling clown, I also started this blog to write about two main things:
Artistically: I’m obsessed with figuring out how pole dancing and stand-up work together. I think there’s a lot of overlap between these mediums, and it’s really helped me articulate things I needed to about feminism, capitalism and dread. And silly stuff too. It’s showbiz, kids!
Existentially: Pole dancing has helped me manage the chaos of my fizzy and frequently uncooperative brain. Pole dancing is powerful healing magic and I’m interested in finding out how it can bring positive change everywhere.
This blog accompanies Pole the Other One! Podcast which I created to talk to pole dancers about what the art of hanging off a stick can teach us about life, work and love. This grew into interviews covering everything from creativity and political activism to gender identity and business skills.
I hope it’s interesting if you’re a pole dancing fan or a comedy nerd – or just generally interested in things humans do to keep clawing our way through the void. Happiness is, I think, a learned skill that looks different for everyone.
